AMA Applauds New Administration Effort to Review Health Insurance Merger Guidelines

For immediate release:
Sept. 22, 2009

AMA Statement Attributable to:
Cecil Wilson, MD
President-elect, American Medical Association

“The AMA applauds DoJ and FTC for their plan to review the existing guidelines for health insurance mergers, which were created 17 years ago.  AMA data consistently shows that current health insurance markets are highly consolidated, which is not in the best interests of patients or physicians. The AMA supports competition and choice in the health insurance market, and we hope that this review leads to vigorous enforcement of antitrust laws for health insurance mergers.  We commend FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz and DOJ Assistant Attorney General Christine Varney for their leadership in undertaking this needed review.”
