AMA Warns International Physicians of Financial Scam

For immediate release:
Sept. 12, 2011

Statement attributable to:
American Medical Association

"The American Medical Association (AMA) is warning international physicians to beware of a financial scam that is targeting physicians living abroad but seeking employment in the United States. It is our understanding that these individuals are presented with a false job offer under the condition that they join the AMA; the job-seekers are then instructed to wire a large sum of money to a specified individual through Western Union under the guise of paying membership dues.

"The membership fees used in this scam are much higher than the AMA’s annual membership dues, and the AMA does not ask members to wire membership dues to an individual person. The AMA is working with the FBI to investigate the situation in hopes of preventing any additional international physicians from falling victim to financial fraud. For questions about AMA membership, please call 800-262-3211."
