AMA Pleased with CMS' Medicare Tobacco Cessation Counseling Expansion

For immediate release:
Aug. 26, 2010

Statement attributable to:
Cecil B. Wilson, MD
President, American Medical Association

“The American Medical Association (AMA) applauds the decision by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to expand Medicare coverage of counseling to help patients stop smoking. We have long supported this expansion of coverage to all Medicare patients who smoke so all seniors can benefit from counseling that can help prevent life-threatening diseases associated with tobacco use. More than 400,000 Americans die needlessly every year as a direct result of tobacco use. This expansion of coverage takes an important step toward helping Medicare patients lead healthier, tobacco-free lives.”

In January 2005, the AMA sent a letter to CMS supporting this expansion.
