New Mexico Physician Barbara McAneny Newly Elected to the AMA Board of Trustees

CHICAGO – Barbara L. McAneny, MD, a practicing oncologist, was elected today as the newest member of the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association (AMA), the nation's largest and most influential physician organization.

"I am honored to be elected to the AMA Board of Trustees," Dr. McAneny said. "I believe that unified physicians are a powerful force, and I look forward to working on behalf of patients and physicians to improve our health care system and help the AMA guide our profession forward."

Dr. McAneny's medical leadership experience includes serving as president of the New Mexico Medical Society and the New Mexico Chapter of the American College of Physicians.  She previously served on the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Board of Directors and the Practicing Physicians' Advisory Council (PPAC), a congressionally designated physician committee that advises Health and Human Services on Medicare.  Currently, she acts as chair of the AMA Council on Medical Service, serves on the Specialty and Service Society Governing Council and is the delegate for the ASCO.    

Dr. McAneny is co-founder of her multi-disciplinary oncology practice and manages the New Mexico Cancer Center.  In New Mexico, she has been involved in medical liability reform, helping to maintain New Mexico's cap on non-economic damages.  She also helped to pass New Mexico's Dee Johnson Clean Indoor Air Act and direct monetary tobacco settlements toward prevention efforts. She also chairs the Albuquerque Emergency Medical Service Authority.

Dr. McAneny's term on the Board will last four years.
