SAN DIEGO – The American Medical Association (AMA) today awarded its 2010 Benjamin Rush Award for Citizenship and Community Service to Busharat Ahmad, M.D., an ophthalmologist from Monroe, Mich. Each year, the award recognizes a physician who has gone above and beyond their professional call of duty to make an outstanding public service contribution to their local community. Dr. Ahmad received the award today during the opening session of the 2010 Interim Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates in San Diego, California.

Throughout his 43 years in medicine and now into retirement, Dr. Ahmed has dedicated his life and career to community service. He is currently active in two free clinics in downtown Detroit, one of which he founded. His community involvement also includes service as president of the Marquette Michigan Chamber of Commerce and president of the Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education. He currently serves as chair of the Rotary Youth Exchange in Monroe, Michigan.

“Dr. Ahmad’s generosity in providing free eye care to those who would not otherwise have access to it demonstrates an extraordinary act of kindness and selflessness,” said AMA President Cecil B. Wilson, M.D. “Dr. Ahmad leads by example, is an inspiration to other physicians, and we are honored that he has been an AMA member for 39 years.”

Dr. Ahmad is one of the most well-known and respected international medical graduates (IMG) in the U.S. A strong advocate for IMGs, Dr. Ahmad is a pioneering leader whose tireless efforts resulted in the formation of the AMA IMG Section in 1997. Dr. Ahmad also founded and served as the first chair of the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) International Medical Graduates Section.

A long-time member of the AMA and MSMS, Dr. Ahmad has served as president of the Upper Peninsula Medical Society, as president of the Marquette-Alger County Medical Society and as a member of the MSMS Board of Directors.  Dr. Ahmad continues to serve as delegates to the AMA House of Delegates and the MSMS House of Delegates.
