For immediate release:
Feb. 26, 2014

Statement attributed to:
Ardis Dee Hoven, M.D.
President, American Medical Association

"The AMA fully supports the creation of one accreditation system for graduate medical education (GME) programs that will now include graduates of both allopathic and osteopathic medical schools. We commend the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) for their collaborative efforts to develop a unified accreditation system for GME.

"Through our Accelerating Change in Medical Education (ACE) initiative, the AMA is committed to shaping graduate medical education to enable the next generation of physicians to maintain the tradition of professional and clinical excellence within our evolving health care system. We will continue to work closely with ACGME and residency committees on standards for graduate medical education, as well as support federal and state-level advocacy that supports graduate medical education."
