For immediate release:
Dec. 11, 2013

Statement attributable to:
Ardis Dee Hoven, MD
President, American Medical Association

“The American Medical Association commends the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee for proposing bipartisan legislation to repeal the irreparably flawed Medicare payment formula known as SGR and moving toward a Medicare program that rewards high-quality care and reduces costs.

“The AMA appreciates the Committee’s significant efforts to solicit and incorporate input from the physician community. Our shared commitment to work together toward reform has generated significant progress for a pathway to a more stable, higher performing Medicare program, and the AMA strongly urges Committee members to support the proposal at the markup scheduled for tomorrow.

“Importantly, the Chairman’s mark includes key improvements over an earlier draft proposal, including three years of positive updates to Medicare physician payments. Reliable payment updates are essential to supporting physician practice investments and advancing health system innovation that will improve care for patients."
