AMA Calls for Release of Unfairly Convicted Health Care Professionals in Bahrain
For immediate release:
Oct. 5, 2012
Statement attributable to:
Jeremy A. Lazarus, MD
President, American Medical Association
"The American Medical Association joins with the world medical community in calling for the immediate release of health professionals in Bahrain who have been unjustly convicted and imprisoned for aiding injured protestors.
"Trying and convicting physicians, nurses and other health professionals solely for rendering medical care to the injured is a serious violation of the ethical and legal principles of medical neutrality. Health professionals must be able to tend the injured and ill without regard to politics, religion, nationality or race.
"Providing care to those in need is not a crime. The Bahrain authorities should take immediate steps to drop the unfair prison sentences and allow the health professionals to resume the practice of medicine without fear of reprisal."
