AMA to San Francisco Examiner: Now Is the Time to Take Action on Health Care

April 16, 2009 (published)

San Francisco Examiner
Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:

The uninsured may not be speaking with one voice in Washington, D.C., but many advocacy groups are speaking out on their behalf and calling for health reforms that cover all. The American Medical Association has been actively working to cover the uninsured, and we’ve partnered with like-minded organizations to propose productive solutions to improve the health care system.

As more people are hurt by the troubled economy and see firsthand how health insurance is linked to employment, the call for meaningful health reform that covers all Americans has grown. We have a historic opportunity to ensure that everyone has affordable, quality health care coverage.

Fixing the health care system is good for families, and it’s good for the economy. Legislators from both sides of the aisle have stated a commitment to action, and we encourage them to seize this chance for reform.

Nancy H. Nielsen, MD
President, American Medical Association
