To the Editor:
Contrary to the statements made by guest columnist Marcus Michles ("Medical malpractice insurance needs fixed," Orlando Sentinel, Thursday), the American Medical Association is working to increase the supply of physicians and is urging Congress to lift the cap on government-funded residency-training slots for physicians and surgeons so that all future medical students can finish their training in their chosen specialty.
As millions of Americans obtain health insurance for the first time and can now access ongoing health care, it is critical that our nation ensures a strong and viable physician work force.
Since 2000, at least 26 states and 17 medical specialties have reported physician work force shortages, and more states and medical specialties predict coming shortages. To ensure an adequate physician work force, proper graduate medical education funding is crucial.
The AMA will continue to advocate for increased funding for graduate programs to address physician shortages and ensure patient access to care.
