Membership Eligibility
Membership in the AMA is open to:
- Physicians who have earned their doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy degree and are residing in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam or the Virgin Islands.
- Resident physicians who are attending an accredited residency or fellowship program in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam or the Virgin Islands.
- Medical students enrolled in a Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) accredited program.
- If you are a first-year medical student enrolled in an LCME- or AOA-accredited program, please enroll through your AMA-MSS chapter membership liaison. If you do not know who your liaison is, please contact the MSSOP program manager via e-mail at mssop@ama-assn.org or call AMA Member Relations at (800) 262-3211, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Conditions of AMA membership
- All members must abide by the Principles of Medical Ethics and comply with the Bylaws of the American Medical Association and the Rules of the AMA Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs.
- Applicants and members are required to disclose to the AMA Office of General Counsel any violations of the Principles of Medical Ethics or unprofessional conduct including actions taken regarding professional licensure, medical staff privileges, or felony or fraud convictions. Additionally, the Health Care Quality Improvement Act requires professional societies (such as the AMA) to report certain professional review actions, including denial of membership, to the National Practitioner Data Bank.
