Tell Congress enough is enough!

The U.S. Senate is considering proposals to temporarily patch the Medicare cuts once again. One of the proposals being considered would provide payment updates of 2.2 percent for the remainder of 2010 and an additional 1 percent increase in 2011. However, in 2012 the SGR formula will once again go into effect and payments will be cut by an estimated 33 percent!

Urge them to end their mismanagement of these important health care programs, and honor their commitment to military families and older Americans. It is long past time for Congress to find a long-term solution to the SGR that does not create an even bigger problem in the future. Enough is enough!

For the third time this year, physicians were hit with a 21 percent cut in their Medicare payments. And, for the second time this year, these cuts are taking effect because Congress adjourned for a holiday recess without addressing the problem. This instability is wreaking havoc on physician practices and on our health care system. Our nation's seniors and military families covered by TRICARE frequently struggle when they need to find a physician. They deserve better management of their health care programs. 
 
It is long past time for Congress to address the flawed sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula that is creating this problem. Passing temporary "fixes" that make future cuts steeper and escalate the costs of permanent payment reform is not the fiscally responsible course to take, nor does it support the long-term viability of these important health care programs. 
 
Enough is enough! It is time for Congress to pass a long-term solution to the SGR formula and move to a more stable Medicare physician payment system that provides security for patients and the physicians who care for them.
