The AMA Foundation is dedicated to improving the health of all Americans by hosting public education campaigns and supporting community service efforts across the country. Below are the public health related initiatives offered by the AMA Foundation:
Health Care Recovery Fund
Launched in response to the 2005 hurricane destruction in the Gulf Coast, the fund provides grants of up to $2,500 to practicing physicians in FEMA-declared disasters areas to help them rebuild or restore their damaged medical practices in that declared disaster area. The AMA Foundation is currently accepting donations to the Health Care Recovery Fund to provide as many relief grants as possible for future disasters.
Healthy Communities/Healthy America Fund
The Healthy Communities/Healthy America Fund directs resources to helping some of our nation's most vulnerable populations. The grants offered by this fund support physician-led clinics in the U.S. that are already promoting healthier communities and addressing the needs of patients who face obstacles in accessing care. Health Literacy Program
The term “health literacy” refers to a patient’s ability to understand common health care communications, such as prescription instructions, test results and insurance forms. According to the Institute of Medicine Report on health literacy, 90 million people have difficulty understanding and using health information.
Worldscopes
Worldscopes is a Caring for Humanity project of the AMA and the AMA Foundation in cooperation with the AMA Alliance. WorldScopes hopes to collect 100,000 stethoscopes from US physicians and distribute them – with the help of humanitarian organizations – to communities around the world where medical supplies are scarce.
Fund for Better Health
The AMA Foundation, with support from the AMA Alliance, launched the Fund for Better Health initiative in 2002 to support public health community service projects in furtherance of the charitable and educational purposes of the AMA Foundation.
Cardio HIT Program
This program assists physicians in managing and improving their patients' cardiovascular care using evidence-based, nationally-recognized, physician clinical performance measures integrated into electronic health record systems.
Patient Centered Communication
AMA Foundation has a contract with the AMA to develop a consensus report and performance measurement toolkit for the Connecticut Health Foundation on the topic of Patient Centered Communication to Reduce Health Disparities.
