Part-Time Practice: Discounted Premiums

Selecting a professional liability insurance carrier is one of the most important business decisions facing physicians today. The choice should be made on the basis of the many factors reviewed in the AMA-YPS publication, "Professional Liability Insurance: Considerations for Young Physicians."

The AMA Young Physicians Section has identified some liability carriers (PDF, 300KB, requires Adobe Acrobat Reader) who offer some type of reduced premiums for physicians who practice part-time. Our listing is provided for information only, is not meant to be exhaustive, and is not meant to be an endorsement of any company or its products. Note that many carriers offer discounts to physicians in their first several years of practice, to resident physicians who moonlight, to locum tenens physicians, to those completing a military or public service obligation as remuneration for medical school tuition. It always pays to check directly with your existing carrier or any carrier you’re potentially considering and ask what premiums reductions are available, or through your state medical society or medical specialty society about specially negotiated discounts.

The AMA Young Physicians Section also has compiled additional information about working part-time.
