Specialty Specific Information, provided by the AMA's Medical Student Section, provides links to specialty societies and colleges.  There you can find information on the specialty, training, and career choices within the specialty.

Careers in Medicine (formerly MedCAREERS) is a four-phase program sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) designed to assist medical students in understanding their options for choosing a specialty and selecting and applying to a residency program. Careers in Medicine is in partnership with medical schools, and requires an access code and registration.

ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) transmits residency applications, letters of recommendation, Dean's Letters, transcripts, and other supporting credentials from medical schools to residency program directors using the Internet. Sponsored through the AAMC.

NRMP (National Resident Matching Program) matches medical students and residency programs to optimize the rank ordered choices of students and program directors. The NRMP also conducts matches for fellowship positions in 19 specialty areas, through its Specialties Matching Services.

Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is responsible for the accreditation of post-MD medical training programs within the US.

FindAResident™ posts electronic resumes for medical students looking for positions after the NRMP Match, as well as for current residents looking for another program. Program directors seeking to fill unfilled positions have immediate access to the resumes. Sponsored through the AAMC.

ResidentSwap lists vacant residency positions as posted by programs, and lists spots that are currently filled by residents who would like to swap location or specialty with another resident.  ResidentSwap.org is a partner of the Student Doctor Network.

Student and resident organizations

American Medical Student Association is a student-governed, national organization committed to representing the concerns of physicians-in-training, with a membership of over 50,000 medical students, pre-medical students, residents and practicing physicians.

Committee of Interns and Residents is the largest housestaff union in the country, representing more than 12,000 residents in California, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. CIR contracts improve housestaff salaries and conditions as well as enhance the quality of patient care.

Certification pass rates

American Board of Internal Medicine posts 3-year cumulative internal medicine certifying exam pass rates for all ACGME-accredited programs in the US.

American Board of Pediatrics posts 3-year cumulative general pediatrics certifying exam pass rates for all ACGME-accredited programs in the US, as well as Canadian programs accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

American Board of Surgery posts 5-year cumulative passrates of first-time examinees in all ACGME-accredited general surgery programs.

Community characteristics, cost-of-living comparisons and child care resources

Sperling’s Best Places compares cities in housing, cost-of-living, crime, education, economy, health and climate.

Child Care Aware is a non-profit initiative committed to helping parents find the best information on locating quality child care and child care resources in their community.

National Association for Family Child Care provides technical assistance to family child care associations, and provides a list of accredited family child care providers.

National Network for Child Care (Cooperative Extension Systems) provides child care information by state, including licensing information and referral sources.

FindCareNow offers listings of childcare centers, preschools, and resources for childcare. Also included are resources for elder care. Requires registration.
