AMA-YPS Governing Council positions and duties
Candidates for the AMA-YPS Governing Council must be active physician members of the AMA who are under 40 years of age or, if over 40, within the first eight years of practice after residency and fellowship. Governing Council elections are held in June at the Annual meetings of the AMA-YPS Assembly. All Governing Council members are required to attend the AMA Annual and Interim meetings (at least four days each) and two Governing Council meetings (two weekend days each). General Governing Council duties

Direct AMA-YPS programs and activities and contribute to the development of the Section's annual work plan

Appoint ad hoc committees as subject to appropriate approvals

Contribute to Governing Council and Section communications

Engage in AMA membership recruitment and retention activities
Chair
-
Preside over meetings of the AMA-YPS Governing Council
-
Preside over Assembly meetings in the absence of, or at the request of, the AMA-YPS Speaker
-
Serve as the spokesperson for the AMA-YPS, except on matters pending before the AMA House of Delegates (HOD)
Speaker (new position)

Preside over the business meetings of the AMA-YPS Assembly in an impartial manner

Organize and conduct Assembly meetings in accordance with: 1) the current parliamentary procedure authority as chosen by the AMA-HOD; 2) the AMA bylaws; and 3) the AMA-YPS Internal Operating Procedures

Provide for oversight and enforcement of the Campaign Rules

Lead an orientation at each Assembly meeting for new AMA-YPS delegates

Work with the Governing Council in instructing the convention committees regarding their duties

Assist the AMA-YPS delegate with the HOD handbook review process

Refer resolutions and reports submitted for consideration at the AMA-YPS Assembly business meetings to reference committees

Prepare a document summarizing parliamentary procedure to be used at the Assembly meeting

Review the AMA-YPS Digest of Actions for consistency with Assembly action
Immediate past chair

Assist the chair in the performance of his or her duties

Preside at meetings of the AMA-YPS Governing Council in the absence of, or at the request of, the chair

If the chair is not available, serve as the spokesperson for the AMA-YPS, except on matters pending before the HOD
Delegate

Represent the AMA-YPS at Annual and Interim HOD meetings (the delegate has voting privileges in the HOD)

Review all resolutions submitted by the AMA-YPS to the HOD

Coordinate and preside over the Section's HOD handbook review process

Testify at HOD reference committees in support of AMA-YPS resolutions

Coordinate HOD reference committee testimony on other HOD items of business deemed relevant to the AMA-YPS

Vote consistently with the AMA-YPS Assembly's recommendations, and use one's best judgment when voting without specific direction from the Assembly

Summarize HOD final actions on reports and resolutions deemed relevant to the AMA-YPS and distribute a "delegate's report" to the Assembly following each Annual and Interim meeting
Alternate delegate

Represent the AMA-YPS at the HOD meeting

Assist the delegate with his or her duties

Participate in the Section's handbook review process

Vote and testify in the HOD at the request of the delegate or when the delegate is absent
Member at-large

Participate in all Governing Council deliberations

Assist the chair and chair-elect during AMA-YPS Assembly meetings

Assist the AMA-YPS delegate and alternate delegate during HOD meetings
