How to use the archives

Members of the American Medical Association have access to the AMA Archives as one of the many benefits of AMA membership. Members enjoy access to more than 50 historical collections (Word, 499KB) for research and utilize a wide assortment of photos, rare books, audio and video documenting the history of the AMA.  AMA members pay no use fees and no fees to photocopy small amounts of archival materials. Members do pay a fee for the reproduction of photographic or audiovisual materials from the Archives collection.

Non-members only have access to the Historical Health Fraud Collection.  This is the only AMA Archive collection that is open to collegiate and historical researchers from the public. Non-members will pay a per/carton fee for use of the Historical Health Fraud Collection, which is stored offsite due to the size of the collection. Non-members will pay $43 dollars for the first carton of material they wish to view and $2.25 for each additional carton to cover transportation costs. Researchers may request up to 20 cartons at one time. Onsite researchers may also request photocopies from the Health Fraud Collection at a cost of $1.00 per page.

The AMA History web page offers both members and the public a wealth of general AMA history information including timelines and FAQ's. There are many resources listed in the FAQ section, including several that are widely available to the public through local public or medical school libraries and that address the activities and history of the AMA.

Whether you are writing an article, a paper, or book; producing a documentary film or video; preparing a slide presentation or exhibition; or simply have an interest in knowing more about AMA history, you are invited to schedule an appointment to visit the Archives at the AMA headquarters in Chicago. Hours of operation are 9 a.m.–4 p.m., Monday through Friday. For an appointment, write, call or e-mail:
