The Texas Medical Association Young Physician Section is pleased to support the nomination of Dr. Dawn C. Buckingham for Chair-Elect of the AMA Young Physicians Section. Dr. Buckingham has been a member of the TMA since 1993. As a dedicated member of the Young Physician Section, Dr. Buckingham has served on the YPS Executive Council as Past Chair and AMA Delegate. In addition, Dr. Buckingham serves on the TMA Committee on Membership and is District Chair of the Texas Medical Association Political Action Committee.

Further, Dr. Buckingham is very active at within her county and specialty society through her current roles as President of the University of Texas Medical Branch Ophthalmology Alumni Association, Treasurer of the Texas Ophthalmological Association, Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Ophthalmic Medical Technology Editorial Board, and Member of the Travis County Medical Society Delegation to TMA.

The Texas Medical Association and the Young Physician Section have been impressed with the dedication and service of Dr. Buckingham. Again, the TMA is pleased that Dr. Buckingham is being considered for the Chair-Elect position and wholeheartedly supports her nomination.

Candidate’s statement of interest

I am running for Chair of the YPS because I want to support you to become a future leader in medicine. Our section exists to train up the future leaders of medicine and to advocate for young physician issues.   As chair, I would incorporate leadership training into every meeting to help you become a better candidate for the offices you seek.  Additionally, I would create time in the meeting schedule for open discussion of young physician issues so that together we can develop the most effective advocacy agenda.    Next, I would improve our social networking opportunities and create a formal bridge to welcome members of the RFS into the YPS.   As your Member at Large, I advocated strongly for young physicians seeking leadership positions, participated in the GC deliberations, and monitored and testified in front of AMA HOD reference committees.  Serving on the GC was a wonderful experience.  Through that office as well as my participation in the ad hoc Bylaws committee, the credentials committee and the hand book review committee I have developed a wonderful working relationship with the other members of the GC as well as our fantastic AMA staff.  Furthermore, I have gained a vast experience as well as an insight as to how the Young Physician Section of the AMA functions.

I ask for your vote for Dawn Buckingham, MD, FACS for Chair-Elect of the AMA YPS.  I am an experienced leader with strong advocacy and consensus building skills who will work tirelessly on your behalf.
