Educating Physicians on Controversies and Challenges in Health: Health Care Disparities Among Racial-Ethnic Minority Patients

Program description
This program provides physicians with a broad overview of health disparities among racial-ethnic minority patients. In addition, this program provides physicians with strategies to enhance services for racial-ethnic minority patients, including building trust and addressing language barriers. Physicians will learn about the practice of racial and ethnic data collection to improve patient care. Furthermore, physicians will observe how to apply such disparity solution strategies to a specific medical condition, cardiovascular disease.

Intended audience
This continuing medical education program is intended for primary care physicians, residents, and medical students.

Learning objectives

  1. Recognize health care disparities in the United States among racial-ethnic minorities.
  2. Apply strategies to reduce health care disparities in practice.
  3. Describe the impact of communication barriers on patient care.
  4. Explain strategies to enhance patient-provider communication among racial-ethnic minorities.

Accreditation
The American Medical Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. This enduring continuing medical education activity was planned and produced in accordance with the ACCME Essentials.

Information on CME credit
The American Medical Association designates this education activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM. Physician should claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Instructions for CME credit
