"...my research experiences that were made possible by the AMA Foundation...have been defining moments in my decision to pursue a combined academic and clinical career. Considering rising medical school debt along with years of residency training and decreasing federal funding, the Foundation's commitment to supporting students' research ideas is a source of encouragement - that embarking on an academic career may actually be a worthwhile journey."

“I...learned about the process of designing a research project - from honing in on a tight question to developing feasible experiments that will answer the question to presenting the data to a wide variety of audiences to connecting my results to a medical application...I can take this process and experience and apply it to any other research field...”

“The AMA Foundation Seed Grant was instrumental in my research which explores the cause of a common killer of children and young athletes - hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This is often known as the disease which claims the lives of athletes, such as basketball players who collapse on the court. While this is known to be a genetic disease, nearly half of all patients with this disease have no known genetic mutation...The AMA Foundation Seed Grant helped me to establish a critical tool in the lab which I used to study these recently discovered mutations to understand how these patients’ diseases develop...Overall, through the generosity of the AMA Foundation, we have not only shed new light on how these patients got sick, but also on a potentially new subtype of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.”

“I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank the AMA Foundation for the research opportunities afforded to me by the Seed Grant funds. It has truly been a wonderful experience which would not have been possible had it not been for the funds provided. What I have learned from my research activities will serve me well as I pursue other future research endeavors.”

“The AMA Foundation seed grant provided me with a unique opportunity to perform clinical outcomes research and the financial resources necessary to present this work in a national forum. Over the last year, I have learned how to ask a focused question, collect the pertinent data, perform the appropriate statistical calculations, analyze the results and present this work as both a formal oral presentation and in manuscript form.”

"I learned a significant amount about organizing and carrying out a large animal research study with multiple components and collaborators...In my reading and manuscript preparation, I also learned a great deal from the HIV co-infection literature, which will be pertinent not only to my research career, but also my clinical work."

"Since this project was planned, led, performed, and completed under my direct supervision, I was able to see every aspect of a research project from its initial conception to the final editing of the manuscript. Going through the entire process was incredibly educational and rewarding...Thank you again for everything. It's made a big difference."

"My goal with this project was to be able to ultimately publish my work and present that work at a national conference...I have been able to achieve my goal since I have been able to prepare my work for publication review, and I have recently been able to submit my work for presentation at the AAAAI national conference."
