About the Committee
The Membership Retention and Recruitment Committee (MRR) is charged with achieving 100% membership of all medical students, both allopathic and osteopathic, in the MSS. In a sense, it is our responsibility to grow the AMA, to continue its mission, and to produce future members and physician-leaders in healthcare. Together, we aim to give every medical student a voice by helping them join the AMA, through assisting struggling chapters around the country, targeting groups who have otherwise shied away from the AMA, and educating students about the benefits of AMA membership. Our goal is 100% membership at every school, in every state, all over the country, and we have taken that duty upon ourselves to relentlessly pursue our goal until it is reached!

Committee Goals
Our committee has been charged with the following goals for its 2007-2008 term:

  • Work with the Resident and Fellows Section (RFS) to develop a membership retention and recruitment plan of action to improve member retention into residency.
  • Work with Region chairs and AMA Membership staff to identify struggling and/or emerging chapters in order to provide them with increased resources. Target these chapters to participate in the “Succeeding in Medical School” initiative. Encourage GC members to attend a minimum of three events.
  • Continue to work with AMA Membership staff, chapter recruiters, and the Membership Retention and Recruitment (MRR) committee to ensure recruitment efforts across the board.
  • Study the feasibility and advantage of further reduction in membership dues to all medical students eligible to join the AMA-MSS within the context of other efforts for increasing membership. Further study the factors that motivate students to choose to join and stay involved in the AMA.
  • Contribute to Interim and Annual meeting programming focusing on health care access.

Resources

Chapter Involvement Grants
These grants are made available to all AMA-MSS chapters to use for purposes of recruitment, education, and community service, worth up to $1000 for each academic year. These funds have been specifically set aside for students, so all you have to do is apply!

Medical Student Section Outreach Program (MSSOP)
Each school should have an MSSOP representative, who coordinates chapter recruitment efforts with the AMA. Chapters can order recruitment incentives (Stedman’s Medical Dictionaries, Deluxe Dissection Kits) and recruitment materials (flyers, handouts, applications) as well as find a multitude of ideas for recruitment activities and some talking points to bring up with potential members.

State/Local Medical Societies
State and local medical societies are more than happy to assist chapters with recruiting efforts. If they have not already contacted your chapter, contact them as they will want to grow their own membership and might offer incentives of their own to help recruit new members.
