Statement attributable to:
Edward Langston, MD
AMA Board Chair-Elect
"The American Medical Association recognizes that there are physician shortages in many regions and specialties, including family physicians, and that evidence exists for additional shortages in the future. In fact, scheduled Medicare cuts of 40 percent over the next nine years are certain to make matters worse. We are dedicated to making sure patients have access to the physicians they need.
"The AMA will continue to support those regions and specialties that have identified a need for more doctors. We will continue to work with state medical and specialty societies, as well as state and federal policy makers, to develop and expand funding for graduate medical education in underserved areas and undersupplied specialties."
