Introduction
Beginning in 2001, when two Summit meetings were held, the American Medical Association (AMA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have co-sponsored the annual National Influenza Summit meetings. Attendance at these meetings was, and remains, by invitation only.
The 2003 National Influenza Summit featured participation from over 97 persons representing over 54 organizational stakeholders in influenza vaccine research, production, distribution, and administration, all present to discuss important issues on influenza vaccine so as to achieve the Healthy People 2010 goals for influenza vaccine. Additionally, throughout the year, the Summit participants continue to collaborate to lend their efforts to address barriers that may reduce influenza vaccinations. These range from addressing payment problems, to communicating nationally on the benefits of influenza vaccination, to creating tools to facilitate the provision of vaccine.
The AMA and CDC are pleased that the 2004 National Influenza Summit was successfully held on Apr. 13 - 14, 2004 at the Crowne Plaza Ravinia Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia.
The participant list has expanded to include important stakeholders that were not able to be present at the 2003 Summit. The National Influenza Summit is now acknowledged as an informal partnership of stakeholders available to advise on and respond to issues of influenza vaccination all year round.
Nine working groups currently exist within the Summit. However, the activity levels of these working groups ebb and flow depending on the current importance of the topic that they handle, but all are ready to act on a subject rapidly should the need arise. Additionally, the Summit stands ready to add new working groups in response to new issues that may arise for the 2004-2005 influenza season.
Summit agenda
The agenda for the 2004 Summit reflected the comments and feedback received from Summit participants. This year, the Summit agenda moved away from the workgroup-oriented approach of the previous summits and towards a topical/thematic approach. The above-mentioned workgroups still exist and their work remains invaluable (in fact, many of the topics that were discussed in the 2004 Summit are items on various workgroups’ agendas). However, in order for all Summit participants to be able to have input into the actions of the Summit, the agenda as drafted was topic-oriented.
This topical approach allowed relevant and current background material to be presented at the plenary session for each theme. The plenary sessions were then to be followed by moderated breakout sessions on a variety of topics pertinent to that theme. Thus, all Summit participants had an opportunity to contribute to ALL themes. Please see the appendix of the agenda for listings of the plenary presentations and topics that were discussed at the breakout discussions.
Based upon the reports from the breakout groups following each theme, a summary report was presented highlighting what the Summit suggested as most important actions for the upcoming 2004-2005 season; actions that the Summit partners will pursue.
