Ease into retirement
A May 5 article looks at how physicians can use their practice contract to ease into retirement.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has recently updated its The Physician Reentry into the Workforce Project Web site to include resources for physicians along with information on the reentry project. This link will take you off the AMA Web site. The AMA is not responsible for the content of other Web sites.

Background:

More physicians are working in non-traditional and/or mulitiple positions; job sharing; withdrawing from the workforce for periods of time; and/or working with reduced hours or part-time, either short- or long-term as noted in these research findings:

  • According to data collected by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), 56 percent of pediatricians are women, of whom 35 percent worked part-time in 2006 (excluding residents and those in fellowship training).
  • A 2002 survey of 511 physicians conducted by the AMA and the AAP found that more than 40 percent of the respondents had worked part-time and that the duration of part-time employment ranged from 2 months to 35 years.
  • This same survey also found a wide range of perspectives regarding the number of hours worked per week that could be considered part-time/reduced hours of employment. Most responses ranged from 16 to 30 hours per week with an approximately equal number of respondents at the low and high ends of the range.

We invite you to share your ideas and suggestions so that we can continue to build this resource, and to give us feedback through the Web site survey. The AAP and AMA are committed to working together to explore these important workforce issues and help our members find the best practice options for them and their patients.
