Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment

The American Medical Association is in the process of developing the 6th edition of the Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment (Guides), the most commonly used source for the assessment and rating of permanent impairment. An exciting new process is being implemented to:
  1. ensure more comprehensive review prior to publication of the 6th edition, and
  2. provide an opportunity for broader input from stakeholders on an ongoing basis for all future editions.

We are now inviting Federation Member organizations to formally nominate a member to represent their organization by serving on the Guides Advisory Committee.

Advisory Committee

This Advisory Committee will be comprised of representatives from state and medical specialty societies that are members of the House of Delegates and other stakeholders, including certification organizations, teaching organizations and Workers' Compensation Systems. The Advisory Committee's primary objectives are the following:

  • To serve as a resource to the Guides Editorial Panel by giving advice on impairment and impairment rating as relevant to the member's specialty.
  • To provide documentation to staff and the Guides Editorial Panel regarding the medical appropriateness of changes under consideration for inclusion in the Guides.
  • To suggest revisions to the Guides as relevant to the member's specialty. The Advisory Committee meets annually to discuss items of mutual concern and to keep abreast of current issues in impairment and disability.
  • To assist in the review and further development of relevant impairment issues and in the preparation of technical education material and articles pertaining to the Guides.
  • To promote and educate its membership on the use and benefits of the Guides.
