Licensure Requirement Exemptions


Under limited circumstances, there are licensure requirement exemptions for IMGs who fall into two categories: Eminent Physicians or Physicians Appointed to a Medical School Faculty.

All information should be verified with state licensing boards. Medical licenses are granted to those physicians meeting all state requirements, at the discretion of the board.

Twelve states license physicians through recognition of Eminence in Medical Education or Practice. They are: California; Washington, DC; Iowa; Kentucky; Louisiana; Maryland; Missouri; Montana; New Hampshire; North Carolina; Pennsylvania and Wyoming.

Physicians appointed to a medical school faculty are excused from the GME requirement for limited licensure in the following 17 states: Alabama; California; Connecticut; Florida; Georgia; Iowa; Kentucky; Louisiana; Maryland; North Carolina; Ohio; Oregon; Pennsylvania; Rhode Island; Tennessee; Vermont and West Virginia.

Physicians Appointed to a Medical Faculty are excused from the Examination Requirement for Limited Licensure in the following17 states (under limited circumstances, including practice only in that institution): Alabama; California; Connecticut; Florida; Georgia; Iowa; Kentucky; Louisiana; Maryland; Missouri; North Carolina; Ohio; Oregon; Rhode Island; Tennessee; Vermont and West Virginia.
