Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics publishes its FAAIR Report

The Alliance on the Prudent Use of Antibiotics (APUA) is an organization dedicated to promoting proper antibiotic use and curbing antibiotic resistance worldwide. It promotes global public health by raising public awareness through education and research projects on proper antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance.

On May 9, 2002, APUA released a report from its Facts about Antibiotics in Animals and Their Impact on Resistance (FAAIR) project. This project was brought about to bring scientific evidence to the policy debate on antimicrobial use in agriculture and the risk it poses to human, animal, and ecological health.

APUA convened a Scientific Advisory Panel of experts from a variety of fields in research and medicine. Panel members analyzed relevant data from the scientific literature and developed consensus conclusions and policy recommendations. The APUA "FAAIR Report," entitled The Need to Improve Antimicrobial Use in Agriculture: Ecological and Human Health Effects, is published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, Vol 34, Supplement 3, June 1, 2002.
