University of Iowa
Iowa City, IA
April 2, 2005

The focus of this meeting will be on the importance of being involved in organized medicine as a medical student and as a physician. We will highlight the ways in which our members can be involved now while in medical school, as well as, opportunities beyond such as the AMA-Resident & Fellow Section, state societies, etc.

We will have speakers in the morning discussing these topics. Dr. Chuck Helms, President of the Iowa Medical Society and Chief of Staff at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, will speak about his journey to becoming a leader in organized medicine and what it should mean to us as students. Karla McHenry from the Iowa Medical Society will speak about lobbying congress and how to use our elected officials. Dr. Siroos Shirazi, Past President of IMS and general surgeon, will speak about the importance of maintaining activity in AMA in residency and beyond.

The afternoon will consist of a panel of GC members and regional leaders discussing how to get involved in AMA and Joe McDonald will speak about positions that are available. Our Regional Delegates are also going to speak about resolution writing and discuss possible resolutions for Chicago. We will also have a presentation on the student debt crisis.

A service project for the afternoon will also be offered as an alternative activity with our Mobile Clinic in Iowa City.
