[YOUR U.S. REPRESENTATIVE]
[DATE]
Dear Representative [___________]:
As a [student/resident/young physician] member of the American Medical Association (AMA), I am writing to request your support of Representatives English’s and Hulshof’s bill, H.R. 436, which would advance tax relief for all students through an enhanced deduction of student loan interest. Senators Grassley and Baucus have introduced a similar bill in the U.S. Senate, S. 152.
Large debt from student loans is a tremendous hardship, especially during the years a physician is undergoing his or her residency program. Students who need to borrow to finance their education should not be restricted on claiming a tax deduction. Current law limits this tax benefit and complicates its administration. Passage of these bills would significantly aid younger workers paying off high student loan debts.
This issue is a high priority for the AMA and its student, resident and young physician members. I am in my [___] year of [medical school/medical residency/practice]. Personally, I [have incurred/will incur $________ ] in student loan debt. I [will have/have had] a difficult time repaying my student loans under the current law [due to/because ____________].
Again, please sign onto to this key legislation. If I can assist you by sharing my story directly with you, please do not hesitate to call upon me.
Respectfully,
John Doe
