2007 Update - Competition in Health Insurance: A Comprehensive Study of US Markets

Competition in Health Insurance: A Comprehensive Study of US MarketsThe 2007 update of Competition in Health Insurance: A Comprehensive Study of US Markets (PDF, 264KB, requires Adobe® Reader®) provides a comprehensive look at health insurance market concentration. The study provides market concentration and health insurer market share information for 313 metropolitan areas in 46 states. The study shows that a large majority of these metropolitan areas are dominated by one or two health insurers which have significant power over the marketplace.

The study is an important tool for the AMA's advocacy agenda, including challenging health insurer mergers and pushing for antitrust relief for physicians.
