The AMA's Private Sector Advocacy (PSA) unit has been tracking which health plans have violated prompt payment laws and have been fined by state regulatory agencies. PSA developed a prompt pay state fines chart that details these fines that have been levied against health plans for violating their respective state prompt payment laws. The chart is currently being updated and will be posted shortly.
Year after year, prompt payment fines have continued to increase both in quantity and in magnitude. In the past several years, state level prompt payment fines, interest and restitution have totaled more than $70 million in aggregate.
PSA will continue to monitor health plans' behavior in response to these new prompt payment laws, and will work to ensure that physicians get paid in a timely manner for the services they provide.
