AMA-IMG Section 2008 Annual Meeting activities

The AMA International Medical Graduates (IMG) Section invites you to participate in its events during the 2008 Annual Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates that provide numerous opportunities to help shape policy relevant to IMG physicians and network with colleagues.

• Attend the inaugural Busharat Ahmand, MD Leadership Development program from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m on Monday, June 16  featuring lessons learned from physicians whose steadfastness and ability to stay focused have helped to pave their pathways to success.
• Make sure your voice is heard by attending the IMG Congress  from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.  on Friday, June 13 and the Delegates Caucus  from 7:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. on Monday, June 16. The keynote speaker for the Congress is James Thompson, MD President/CEO of the Federation of State Medical Boards. These events also include a business meeting featuring topics such as IMG licensure issues and a review of reference committee reports and IMG resolutions.
• Join your IMG colleagues at the Candidates Forum and Caucus from 5:30 p.m.  -  7:15  p.m  on Saturday, June 14 to hear what Board of Trustees and Council Candidates have to say about IMG issues.
• Mark your calendar for the Desserts from Around the World Reception, (PDF, 137KB) from 9:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. on Saturday June 14 to network with colleagues while feasting on desserts with an international flair.

All IMG meetings will take place at the Hyatt Regency Chicago and will be a great venue to actively participate in the business and activities of the AMA-IMG Section.   send an email to img@ama-assn.org.

AMA-IMG Interim Meeting news
The AMA-IMG Section brought together IMG physicians in a number of venues to discuss several issues of importance.  AMA-IMG Congress attendees heard an information-packed presentation from Stephen Seeling, J.D.from the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) on undergraduate medical education migration trends.  The AMA-IMG Caucus provided an additional opportunity for attendees to caucus on items of business before the House of Delegates (HOD), hear organizational reports and discuss other issues of concern such as proportional IMG representation in the HOD. The Caucus also featured guest speaker,Gerard Dillon, PhD, from the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) who provided an update on the comprehensive review of the USMLE.  Attendees were encouraged to actively participate in the AMA-IMG Section by signing up for one or more committee workgroups.

AMA-IMG Section 2007 Annual Meeting update
The AMA-IMG Section meeting included multiple venues for IMG colleagues to participate. At the AMA-IMG Congress, the AMA-IMG Section Governing Council presented an award to Busharat Ahmad, MD, in honor of his work and leadership on behalf of all IMGs.

Other highlights included the ratification of the 2007-2008 AMA-IMG Section Governing Council and the adoption of its first internal operating procedures. Colleagues thanked outgoing Governing Council members Edmond Cabbabe, MD, Bernd A. Wollschlaeger, MD, and Marie-Claude Rigaud, MD, for their years of fine service. AMA-IMG Section Caucus attendees heard candidates' remarks about issues of importance to IMGs and discussed items of business to be considered by the AMA Houseo fo Delegates. A "Desserts From Around the World" reception concluded the section's activities. The section thanks the ethnic medical societies and state IMG sections who cosponsored this reception.
