State Medical Societies’ Role in Advancing the Quality Agenda

Monday, Jun. 16, 2008
9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Hyatt Regency Chicago Hotel
Columbus E-F
Chicago, IL

Description
The AMA-convened Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement® (PCPI) has long been committed to enhancing the quality of patient care by taking the lead in the development, testing, and maintenance of evidence-based clinical performance measures and measurement resources for physicians.  To date, 26 state medical societies are members of the PCPI (CA, CT, DE, FL, GA, IL, IN, IA, KY, MA, MN, MO, MT, NE, NM, NJ, NY, NC, ND, OH, PA, SD, TN, TX, VA, WI).  Membership in the PCPI can help state medical societies advance their quality agendas.

State medical societies are uniquely positioned to increase the awareness and understanding of quality improvement/performance measurement efforts that will affect their patients and their practices  They are also critical in influencing how measures are adopted in local quality improvement initiatives and within practices, health plans, and electronic health record systems.

The AMA has adopted “Quality Improvement in Health Care” as a strategic goal.  Within this effort the AMA aims to establish clinical performance measures through the PCPI, remove barriers to implementation of those measures at the practice level, and facilitate physician engagement and leadership.  Successful improvement of quality of care relies on the critical leadership role that state medical societies assume in regional quality improvement initiatives on behalf of the profession, since these activities will increasingly impact their members and their patients.  This educational session is designed to demonstrate how three state medical societies are leading efforts to improve quality of patient care across their respective states through multi-stakeholder collaboratives.
