AMA members prominent on list of 50 most powerful physician executives

Readers of Modern Healthcare and Modern Physician have named the "50 most Powerful Physician Executives in Health Care" in the magazines' fourth annual ranking.

Heading the list are James Mongan, MD, president and chief executive officer of Partners HealthCare System in Boston; Donald Berwick, MD, president and chief executive officer of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in Boston; and Mark Chassin, MD, president of the Joint Commission in Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.

The list includes 20 members of the American Medical Association (PDF, 28KB), including two AMA leaders.

AMA Trustee Robert Wah, MD, ranked No. 10. Dr. Wah is an obstetrician-gynecologist and reproductive endocrinologist who has served in the AMA House of Delegates since 1990. He is a nationally recognized expert in health information technology (HIT) who manages a portfolio of HIT tools for physicians, hospitals and clinics that provide care for 9.1 million patients worldwide.

AMA Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer Michael D. Maves, MD, is ranked No. 31. An otolaryngologist, Dr. Maves has led the AMA since 2002 in its effort to unite physicians nationwide to work on the most important professional and public health issues.
