To the Editor:
To get the best possible care, it's important for patients to be partners in their health care with their physicians ("Patients in Power," March 4). Patients can start at home with a simple check of the medicine cabinet to make a list of all the medications taken on a regular basis, including supplements, to discuss with their physicians. Remember to safely dispose of expired over-the-counter medicines and unused prescription pills that are no longer needed. Prescription drugs, such as pain relievers and sleeping pills, should be kept out of reach of children and teenagers, and prescription medications should not be shared with family and friends.
The American Medical Association is working to improve patient safety with easy tips for patients and new resources for physicians available at www.ama-assn.org.
Sincerely,
Edward Langston, MD
