AMA Board of Trustees

“The AMA applauds the Department of Education for extending the student loan deferment eligibility used by many medical residents. This will allow medical residents to continue to defer loan payments during their initial residency years. We appreciate the administration’s quick attention to our concerns and willingness to now protect medical residents from a change in the process midstream.

“This extension is a temporary fix. Making it harder for residents to pay back their high debt can deter young physicians from going into primary care medicine or practicing in underserved areas. We are committed to working with Congress and the Department of Education on a long term solution for continued loan deferment eligibility for medical residents.”
