Acute Respiratory Tract Infection Guideline Summaries

e-mail story | print story

Antibiotic resistance, and the appropriate use of antibiotics, remain issues of significant concern for physicians particularly when they treat upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs). However, with several different guidelines available for the management of URTIs, it requires significant efforts to distill the salient point from each of these guidelines.

The California Medical Association Foundation's Alliance Working for Antibiotic Resistance Education (AWARE) project has addressed this issue by creating the Acute Respiratory Tract Infection Guideline Summary for Adults (PDF, 994KB requires Adobe®Reader®) and Pediatrics (PDF, 1158KB). These two compendia summarize the guidelines and recommendations from the leading medical experts and professional organizations in the United States for:

  • Sinusitis
  • Pharyngitis
  • Bronchitis
  • Acute Otitis Media
  • Viral URI

These guideline summaries are broken down into the diagnosis, treatment, and prescribing recommendations for each acute respiratory tract infection listed. The compendia, compiled by academic physician leaders in the field, enable physicians and other healthcare providers to more appropriately prescribe antibiotics for acute respiratory tract infections.

The AMA is delighted to collaborate with AWARE to provide this national edition of their guideline summaries.
