
2007 MSS Annual Meeting

The MSS held its 29th Annual Meeting on June 21–23 at the Chicago Hilton. More than 650 medical students attended the meeting, which offered over thirty educational programs on a range of topics including first aid for the boards, health care disparities, and “Global Opportunities in Medicine” by Edward O’Neil Jr., MD, author of Awakening Hippocrates. A keynote panel was held on Covering the Uninsured, featuring Robert Hertzka, MD, Past President of California Medical Association, Ardis Hoven, MD, AMA Board of Trustees, Michael Gusmano, PhD, Assistant Professor, Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, and B. Dale Magee, MD, President, Massachusetts Medical Society.
The MSS hosted its 4th Annual Medical Specialty Showcase, and it was a resounding success. More than 50 medical specialty socieities in the HOD provided career advice to a large number of medical students.
The MSS Assembly elected the following 2007-2008 MSS Governing Council members: Mark Pascua, Jefferson Medical College, Vice Chair; Justin Mistovich, Wright State University, Delegate; Peter Ragusa, University of Minnesota, Alternate Delegate; Meltem Zeytinoglu, Indiana University, At-Large Officer; Kristie Appelgren, Medical University of South Carolina, Speaker; and Laura Gephart, Loma Linda University, Vice Speaker.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Rana Yehia, University of Florida, will commence her term as AMA-MSS Chair and Chris DeRienzo, Duke University, as Trustee. A special thanks to Ben Galper, Immediate Past Chair, for his outstanding service.
Covering the Uninsured and Protecting Access to Care
The MSS continued its National Service Project, "Covering the Uninsured and Protecting Access to Care," with a service project in a local Chicago neighborhood. More than 30 medical students and four physicians participated in a health fair at The Miracle Center on the Northwest side of Chicago. Over 100 people from the Hermosa Community attended the event, where basic health screenings, enrollment in SCHIP, physical activities, and more were provided.
MSS policy highlights from the Annual Meeting
The Assembly considered 22 items of business, including 11 resolutions and 11 reports. Issues considered were wide-ranging and included Medical Toursim, Error Disclosure and Physician Apologies, GME All-Payer System, Obesity, and more. Thirteen of these items were adopted, eight of which will be forwarded to the AMA House of Delegates (HOD) for consideration at the 2007 Interim Meeting in Hawaii. Two items were referred for report.
