Andrew William Gurman, MD, elected vice speaker, AMA House of Delegates

CHICAGO — The American Medical Association (AMA) announced during its Annual Meeting today the election of an orthopaedic surgeon from central Pennsylvania., Andrew William Gurman, MD, as vice speaker of the AMA House of Delegates (HOD).

"I believe that the AMA is, and must continue to be, the common voice of the house of medicine," Dr. Gurman said. "I plan to reach out to physicians and increase AMA participation, as well as the sharing of innovative ideas."

For the past five years, Dr. Gurman served as speaker of the Pennsylvania Medical Society House of Delegates, and before that, he was president of the Blair County Medical Society.

Dr. Gurman is a member of various medical societies including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), and the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

Dr. Gurman has practiced at Blair Orthopaedic Associates for 21 years, and now serves as the group's president and CEO. He has been a member of the AMA since his first year of medical school.

Dr. Gurman resides in Hollidaysburg, Penn., with his wife Nancy. The couple has been married for 33 years and has two adult daughters. He is a clinical assistant professor at the Penn State College of Medicine and a teaching faculty member at the Altoona Hospital Family Practice Residency Program.
