Gary Katz, MD, MBA

Gary Katz, MD, MBA is an Emergency Physician and Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University, in Columbus, Ohio.  He has been active in organized medicine since 1994 and has practiced in both the private and academic sectors.  This broad experience provides insight to the varied challenges that early career physicians face.

In 1998 Dr. Katz received his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo (now, University of Toledo College of Medicine). He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Summa Health System, Akron, Ohio. In 2005, Dr. Katz earned his MBA from The Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University.

Dr. Katz’s areas of interest focus on leadership development and the integration of business theory into health care policy and the practice of medicine. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians and was recently elected to the Ohio State Medical Association delegation to the AMA. Dr. Katz has also spent countless hours working on state political campaigns to assure that the voice of the physician is heard.

Dr. Katz is a nationally recognized speaker on Emergency Department documentation and coding compliance. He is also the Physician Executive in Residence at OSU-Physicians, the corporate entity for physician faculty at the university.

Outside of the clinical environment, Dr. Katz sits on the board of The Buddy Group, Inc., a multimillion dollar interactive media company based in California. He has also volunteered for Children's Hospice in Columbus to commemorate the memory of his daughter, Samantha.

Though it sounds as if he does nothing but work, Gary’s greatest enjoyment is spending time with his family.  He lives in Dublin, Ohio, with his wife of ten years, Teresa, son, Benjamin (6), and daughters Shauna (2 years) and Rebekah (10 months).

Dr. Katz has enjoyed his time as Chair of the AMA-YPS and hopes that the programming and efforts put forth have contributed to the leadership growth and development opportunities for the young physicians.
