EMR vendors will be happy to provide you with all of the potential benefits of an EMR. Keep in mind that some of these benefits are typically realized when an EMR system is implemented to its full functionality. Just like the software on your home computer, there may be functionality available to you that you are either unaware of or not sure how to use most effectively.

The benefits to using an EMR may include the following:

  • Elimination of chart-pull for patient calls, visits, diagnostics or prescription/refill requests.
  • Electronic review of patient's medical history in a single, easy-to-find location.
  • Notification of required tests, exams, or follow-ups for patient care.
  • Trending of patient vitals and/or test results.
  • Potential reduction in medical errors.
  • Reduction in prescription clarifications with patient or pharmacy.
  • Potential for improved supporting documentation in the event of malpractice claims.
  • Improved reporting about your patients and your practice.
  • Potential reduced costs related to chart filing and transcription.
  • Potential increased reimbursement for services performed.
  • Improved communication with other physicians.
