2006 MSS Annual Meeting
June 8-10, 2006
Hilton Chicago

Nearly 800 students attended the busy MSS Annual Meeting held June 8-10 at the Hilton Chicago. The Assembly considered 20 items of business on medical education, public health, obesity, and internal section issues. Read the final actions from the meeting:

Our keynote speaker, John Lumpkin, MD, MPH, Executive Vice President and Director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, presented “Access and the Art of Medicine: The Path Ahead” to a packed room. Two MemberConnect Roundtables were held just for medical students. Forty educational programs were held on a range of topics, including covering the uninsured, international health, ethics, a residency panel, and much more! See the agenda (PDF, 139KB) for the full listing of events.

The MSS held our 3rd annual Medical Specialty Showcase (PDF, 74KB) on Saturday, June 10, and it was a resounding success. The room buzzed as hundreds of medical students networked with physicians from over 45 specialties to gain career advice. Our students felt that this event provided a unique experience to learn more about the various specialties in one location, as well as the opportunity to network with physicians and specialty staff. The specialties appreciated the chance to talk with students one-on-one about their distinct specialties, as well as discuss future career opportunities.

The MSS presented the 2nd annual Chapter of the Year Award on Friday morning to the Assembly. Fourteen chapters submitted applications and the two finalists are Mercer University School of Medicine and Texas A&M College of Medicine. The winner of the 2005-06 Chapter of the Year is Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.

This meeting marked the last National Service Project (NSP) for “Healthy Lifestyles to Reduce Obesity.” The students were planning to hold a health fair at the Chicago Park District’s Citywide Track and Field Competition; however, due to inclement weather, the event was cancelled. The MSS announced their new NSP for 2006-08: “Covering the Uninsured and Protecting Access to Care.”

At the conclusion of the meeting, Benjamin Galper will start as AMA-MSS Chair and Chris DeRienzo as Student Trustee. A special thanks to Alik Widge, Immediate Past Chair, and Joe McDonald, MD, past Student Trustee.

We are pleased to announce the new MSS Governing Council members: Kendall Allred, Vice Chair; Tamaan Osbourne-Roberts, Delegate; Justin Mistovich, Alternate Delegate; John Vasudevan, At-Large Officer; Aaron Kithcart; and Erin Wilkes, Vice Speaker.
