In the news:

Clinical retraining programs hard to find

Baby bias: Setting policies that are fair for workers
An article in the January 1/8 issue of AMNews examines the issues surrounding managing a practice that is family-friendly but still equitable to non-parents.

Background:

More physicians are working in non-traditional and/or mulitiple positions; job sharing; withdrawing from the workforce for periods of time; and/or working with reduced hours or part-time, either short- or long-term as noted in these research findings:

  • According to data collected by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), 56 percent of pediatricians are women, of whom 35 percent worked part-time in 2006 (excluding residents and those in fellowship training).
  • A 2002 survey of 511 physicians conducted by the AMA and the AAP found that more than 40 percent of the respondents had worked part-time and that the duration of part-time employment ranged from 2 months to 35 years.
  • This same survey also found a wide range of perspectives regarding the number of hours worked per week that could be considered part-time/reduced hours of employment. Most responses ranged from 16 to 30 hours per week with an approximately equal number of respondents at the low and high ends of the range.

We invite you to share your ideas and suggestions so that we can continue to build this resource, and to give us feedback through the Web site survey. The AAP and AMA are committed to working together to explore these important workforce issues and help our members find the best practice options for them and their patients.
