RSVP NOW FOR THE GLBT CAUCUS AT THE 2008 AMA ANNUAL MEETING!

One of the charges of the AMA Advisory Committee on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Issues is to provide education to our members and all physicians on issues of concern to GLBT physicians, medical students and patients. One of the ways in which this is accomplished is through the Advisory Committee’s Annual Caucus.

Each year at the Annual Caucus, the Advisory Committee recruits a physician speaker to address attendees on an issue in which all doctors should be aware when treating their GLBT patients. Past caucuses have focused on such topics as the psychology and biology of sexual orientation, overall GLBT health disparities, and particular issues affecting GLBT youth. This year’s caucus will feature Dr. Kathy Oriel, a family medicine physician from Madison, WI whose presentation is entitled, “Lesbian Health Care: what you don't know is harming them." The event will be held at the Hyatt in Chicago, IL on Friday, June 13,  2008 from 5:30 – 7pm.

All attending the AMA Annual Meeting are welcome to attend. The Advisory Committee is expecting a large turnout. We would ask that you RSVP if you are interested in attending the event. Simply send an email with your contact information to glbt@ama-assn.org. The room information will be sent to you via email prior to your arrival in Chicago.

Does your office have a visible nondiscrimination statement for patients?

The AMA has produced a sample nondiscrimination statement that is suitable for physicians to frame and display in their offices.  This resource can be easily downloaded by clicking on the link below. The AMA is encouraging state medical societies to provide this sample statement to individual physicians to display for patient and staff awareness.  This small but important step ensures a greater level of comfort for all patients entering the physician’s office.
