About the Committee

The MSS Committee on Medical Education (CME) functions as think-tank for the AMA-MSS on issues relating to medical education. We remain informed on the latest trends emerging in the field of medical education, and relay those issues to the Governing Council and the MSS Assembly. In addition to developing reports and resolutions on important medical education issues, our committee works closely with the AMA medical student representatives to various committees such as the LCME, NBME, and CME, as well as the MSS Assembly.

2007- 2008 MSS Committee on Medical Education goals
To better serve the AMA-MSS, our committee has set the following goals for the upcoming year:

  • Work closely with the student ITME representative and the MSS General Assembly to ensure that the student perspective on medical education is adequately addressed in the initiative.  Deliver a report to the ITME leaders expressing the student voice and opinion about the ITME issues from students across the MSS.
  • Continue to monitor the Clinical Skills Assessment Exam (CSAE) and encourage members to complete the CSAE survey.  Take action on the recent findings of the assessment that is conducted in late summer, early fall 2007.
  • Work closely with the NBME student representative and the MSS General Assembly to develop criteria for the implementation of new USMLE exams and the meaning of current exams.
    • Work with the Government Relations Advocacy Fellow (GRAF) to ensure implementation of AMA student dept policy.
  • Complete Reports of interest to MSS Governing Council and MSS General Assembly:
    • Enhancing Interprofessional Clinical Training
    • Develop a Standardized Medical Liability Coverage Requirement
    • Student Voice on ITME Issues
  • Develop interactive programming at the Interim and Annual Meetings to provide members with updates of current medical education issues. Address student-derived issues acquired From A-07/I-07 Med Ed Survey and ongoing inputs.
  • Stimulate chapters to develop medical education resolutions at the AMA-MSS Interim and Annual Meetings.

Current Committee Activities
We hope that you are as excited as we are about the upcoming year. It has been an extremely active time for the AMA-MSS and the Committee on Medical Education. Our major focus has been on key issues including the Initiative to Transform Medical Education (ITME), clinical skills assessment exam (CSAE), and other medical licensing exams, and medical student debt. As medical students at perhaps the most important phase of our medical training, it is important that we become proactive about shaping the direction of medical education.
