Helpful Hints and Considerations

e-mail story | print story

When traveling abroad, here are some helpful hints and considerations:

  1. Make a photocopy of all credit cards (front and back) so you have the phone number to report to report it lost or stolen.
  2. Call your credit card company before leaving to notify them of your planned travel to a foreign country and to authorize foreign purchases.
  3. Make a photocopy of your passport and store in a safe, secure location while abroad.
  4. Contact your bank to ensure that your ATM card/network will be recognized in the foreign country.
  5. Go to the bank before your departure and plan to leave with some foreign currency.
  6. Some countries, such as Latin American countries, require a leaving fee in American dollars. Check to verify what amounts, if any, apply to your country or destination.
  7. Obtain the proper length of stay on your VISA forms when entering foreign immigration.
  8. Check with your individual health insurance company to verify coverage/benefits in a foreign country. If your insurance does not cover you, you will want to consider obtaining a separate international health insurance policy.
  9. Check with your hospital and/or residency program's medical malpractice carrier to verify coverage and/or benefits. You may also need to speak with your program director.

The AMA-RFS strongly urges each international traveler to investigate their contacts and options thoroughly and with great care. Although, the majority of people dedicated to 3rd world medicine are genuine, it is critical that travelers take all appropriate precautions to ensure their personal and financial safety.
