Becoming a Regional Delegate to the AMA House of Delegates provides students the opportunity to participate in the policy-making process and impact the issues that the AMA advocates for.

The following materials are required of all applicants for AMA Delegate from a Medical Student Region (for more information on this position, please see Student Representation in the HOD):

The elected AMA Delegate from a Medical Student Region will be a representative of and be seated with the state delegation representing the student’s medical school. Alternate Delegates will be also be seated with the Delegate’s state delegation. The signature of the state medical society representative verifies that the state delegation is aware of your candidacy, and is willing to accept and include you as a part of the delegation.

Note: A signature does not imply funding responsibility. However, per House of Delegates action on BOT Report 19 (I-00), state societies are strongly encouraged to provide full financial support to student delegates elected from the Regions.

The signature of your dean or preceptor is required to verify that you are a student in good standing, and that you will be given time off to attend all portions of the 2007 Annual and Interim Meetings of the AMA House of Delegates.

After completing this application, please print it out and mail it in with all the submission requirements. All materials for AMA Delegate from a Medical Student Region must be mailed to the address below. The MSS Assembly Meeting Handbook will include only a list of candidates for each Region. No other materials will be copied by the Department of Medical Student Services. Any information you wish to have available for Assembly members at the meeting is your responsibility to provide.

Additional information regarding AMA Delegates from Medical Student Regions:

  • Each Region will be awarded one delegate and corresponding alternate delegate, to be filled by medical students, for each two thousand (2000) medical student members of the AMA
  • The Medical Student Regions and their delegate allocations for 2008 are as follows:

Region 1 (WA, OR, CA, NV, UT, CO, AZ, NM, MT, ND, SD, ID, WY, AK, HI)

AMA Delegates from Medical Student Regions will be elected at each AMA-MSS Interim Assembly Meeting according to guidelines established by the Regions. AMA Delegates from Medical Student Regions will be seated at the following Annual Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates, and will serve for one year.

The minimum guidelines for election of AMA Delegates from Medical Student Regions are as follows:

  • Each Region is responsible for selecting its own delegate(s), based on the process identified by the Region and submitted to the MSS Governing Council by the close of each Annual Meeting.
  • Elections for the Regionally elected student delegates to the AMA House of Delegates will be held at the Interim Meeting of the AMA Medical Student Section.
  • Eligibility rules for candidates will be the same as those for AMA-MSS Governing Council members as outlined in Section IV.C of the AMA-MSS Internal Operating Procedures.
  • Candidates will be required to submit a completed application and CV to the Department of Medical Student Services by the published deadline each year to be kept on file by DMSS.
  • A list of candidates for each Region will be included in the MSS Assembly Meeting Handbook for each Interim Meeting. Individual candidates are personally responsible for reproducing and distributing copies of their CVs and/or personal statements to members of their Region.
  • Each state is entitled to a maximum of one delegate, unless there are fewer candidates than available positions. A state may have an unlimited number of alternate delegates.
  • All election disputes will be referred to the Governing Council.
  • Each Region shall be free to institute more stringent requirements consistent with all other AMA and AMA-MSS rules. These requirements shall serve as minimal guidelines to the Regions.
