How do I join?
You can join online anytime on our secure site, or you can call the AMA Member Relations at (800) 262-3211. Representatives are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Who is eligible to be a member of the AMA?
Membership in the AMA is open to:
- Medical students at accredited medical schools in the United States, Guam, Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands.
- Resident physicians who are attending an accredited residency or fellowship program in the United States, Guam, Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands.
- Physicians who have earned their doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy degree and are residing and practicing in the United States, Guam, Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands.
What are the different categories of membership?

What is the annual cost for AMA membership?

What are some of the different payment options?
There are several types of payment options. If you are paying online or by phone, you may choose one of several credit card options. We accept MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Optima. If you mail in your application and payment, you may pay by credit card or a check made out to the American Medical Association.

Your full dues are charged to your credit card the month your membership application or renewal is received. Your membership is renewed annually by charging your full dues in one lump sum every January thereafter. Your membership will continue from year to year unless canceled by either party. |

Monthly installments with automatic renewal |
Pay monthly. Annual regular physician members are eligible. An equal amount of your dues is billed to your credit card each month, starting the month your membership application is received. The amount is paid in full by the end of that calendar year. This option will automatically renew your membership annually by billing your credit card 1/12 of your dues every month starting the first month of the following year. Your membership will continue from year to year unless canceled by either party. |
What type of membership does the AMA offer to physicians who are retired from active medical practice?
If you are fully retired, older than 65, and were an AMA member the previous year, you can qualify for a dues-exempt membership. A dues-exempt membership entitles you to special member subscription rates to JAMA, Archives and AMNews, as well as all other benefits of regular subscriptions.
Is there a special membership dues rate for physicians who are 65 or older and practicing five to 20 hours a week?
Yes, physicians who are 65 years of age or older and practicing 1-20 hours a week can obtain AMA membership for $210. This includes all of the benefits of regular membership, including subscriptions to JAMA and AMNews.
I am 62 years old and working less than 40 hours a week. What dues do I pay?
Physicians pay the regular membership fee of $420 until they are fully retired and 65 years old.
I just completed three years of residency and will be starting another three-year program. Can I revert back to the $120 multi-year dues rate for first-year residents?
Only first-time residents can pay this special three-year membership rate. Any subsequent residencies will be assessed at the regular resident rate of $45 per year.
When will I be asked to renew my AMA membership?
AMA membership is based on a calendar cycle, so all single-year memberships expire in December. However, you may renew your membership as early as October or as late as March. If you do not renew by the end of March, your benefits of membership and Members-Only registration will be deactivated.
Are my dues tax deductible?
AMA dues are not deductible as a charitable contribution for federal income tax purposes, but may be partially deductible as a business expense.
How long before I receive my member benefits?
Your membership should be posted within two weeks of receiving your information and payment, and you will receive a confirmation notice shortly after. You should receive a Membership Information Packet, which includes your membership card and certificate, approximately three weeks after your membership has been entered into our database. Allow six to eight weeks to receive your first issues of JAMA and AMNews.
How do I update my address or phone number?
If you are a student, resident or physician, you may change your information in several ways:
- Call the Member Relations at (800) 262-3211
- E-mail your changes (along with your name, birthdate, medical school and year of graduation) through our secure Contact Us form
- Visit the AMA Online Data Collection Center
What is “Members-only”?
Certain pages on the AMA Web site are available exclusively to AMA member physicians, and require a username and password for access. These pages contain information or tools that are part of the benefit of membership. Members-only pages are often designated with this icon: ![]()
How do I access “Members-only”?
All members can register for a members-only username and password. If you are a member and have already registered for a members-only username and password, just enter the information when prompted. If you have forgotten your password, you can choose the password creation program again to create a new password.
Can I use my "Members-only" login to access the journals online?
Currently, separate registration processes are required for the Members-only pages and full-text online access for the JAMA and Archives journals. Steps are being taken to combine these processes.
How do I access AMA journals online?
To access JAMA and Archives online, members and subscribers must establish a username and password.
How do I access American Medical News online?
Members can access AMNews online with either a Members-only
login or JAMA and Archives login you must select the
matching radio button when logging in. The mobile
version of AMNews is also available on your Palm or other handheld,
or via your wireless Internet connection.
