2005 MSS Region 7 Fall Meeting
"Translating Medicine...The Media's Perspective"
New York Medical College
Valhalla, NY
October 15-16, 2005
Medical students learn about medicine through school, but what about everyone else? How the general population learns about medicine and what they know is also very important to physicians. A patients understanding of their own illness and general health issues is a vital aspect in treating a patient; therefore, our theme this year is, “Translating Medicine…The Media’s Perspective.” We have chosen four different media perspectives to address and will have a speaker for each category. These include: Hospital Public Relations, Pharmaceutical representative, a TV/Newspaper speaker/writer, and an AMA representative. Each will speak about addressing the general population on medical issues. They will discuss what type of information is chosen to be made available to them and how that information is disbursed in a comprehensible manner.
After the morning speakers, we will have lunch and then breakout sessions, which address medical student issues and needs, such as a residency application workshop, and a board exams workshop. During the breakout session, we will also have a panel of “patients” who will speak about their experience with the medical system and information. After the breakout sessions, we will have the Regional Meeting. That night, there will be an evening outing followed on Sunday by a community service event and a recreational activity.
For more information, including registation, contact the meeting coordinator, Megha Agarwal.
