The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) www.nrmp.org is a private, not-for-profit corporation established in 1952 to provide a uniform date of appointment to positions in graduate medical education (GME) in the United States. Five organizations sponsor the NRMP: American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS); American Medical Association (AMA); Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC); American Hospital Association (AHA), and the Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS).
Q. Does ECFMG certification have to be completed before I register for the Match?
As long as the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) receives notification from ECFMG that you have completed your exam requirements for certification, you will be included in the Match. If you have not received ECFMG certification by the rank order list deadline in late February, NRMP will withdraw you from the Match.
Information and a complete match schedule
Q. I am planning to present for the 2006 residency match. I was looking at the information you have on the residency programs across the U.S., but I could not find any information with regards to acceptance of foreign graduates. If this information is available at your site, could you please let me know how to look it up.
A. There’s good news out there. In 2005, the number of international medical graduates accepted into residencies increased for the third year in a row (reversing a previous 5-year decline). To find out more information on acceptance of foreign graduates, go to the National Resident Matching Program’s Web site.
